About Costa Rica
Nosara is a small inland Tico village in close proximity to several kilometers of Pacific Ocean beaches. Today, those beaches remain in their natural state as national parks and sea turtle refuges. The Beaches of Nosara are considered by many to be the gems of Guanacaste\'s Gold Coast. The beaches have remained nearly pristine due to the diligence of active expatriate communities that have maintained a twenty-year environmental campaign resisting large-scale high-density development that would encroach the Maritime Zone of the beaches. The success of these conservation efforts is now world famous and noteworthy in itself. The results of these efforts and the people that live in the area make this a very special place. The Beaches of Nosara: Playa Guiones, Pelada, Nosara and Ostional are located on the south-central coast of the Nicoya Pennisula in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Climate: Visualize Endless Summer The Total rainfail in Nosara is moderate compared to southern Pacific coast regions. The Central Pacific (Jaco Beach south to Quepos for example) receives 260 inches of rain per year and always has higher humidity. The northern Guanacaste Penninsula has suffered deforestation in the past. Nosara, on the other hand, has enjoyed reforestation over the last 45 years and the canopy now supports a healthy population of Howler Monkeys, birds and other wildlife. Beaches of Nosara, Past, Present and Future Nosara is a quiet village 5km inland from the Playas (beaches) of Nosara which consists of four beaches, Playa Guiones, Pelada, Nosara and Ostional. Playa Ostional is a national park created for the protection of the highly endangered Oliver Ridley, Loria and Leatherback marine turtles that use the beach for reproduction. Today, miles of Nosara beach front is protected under designation as national parks of Costa Rica. The Beaches of Nosara Two key elements combine to comprise the unique community of the Beaches of Nosara. Ostional National Park The successful preservation of miles of unspoiled beach is greatly attributed to conservation minded Nosarians for years ago lobbied against granting maritime zone concessions bordering the American Project (see below). This bold step saved miles of beachfront for us all to enjoy, which today is priceless. This in itself makes the Beaches of Nosara extremely unique in all of Costa Rica, if not the world, and very special as a nature and beach lovers paradise. All who enjoy The Beaches of Nosara today owe a debt of gratitude to those community leaders and activists who fought the battle for decades and to those who now continue the vigil to preserve the beaches as protected marine refuge. The American Project Directly bordering Playa Pelada and Playa Guiones is the "Amercian Project" which was started in the late 1960's and coined after the original -american- developer, David Alan Hutchinson who, due to no road access to the area, landed and unloaded bulldozers and shovels on the beach in converted World War II troop carriers, so the story goes. Hutchinson then proceeded to layout a golf course community of some 800 lots. That development was ahead of its time and never finished, but the roads, power and water system were put in place. A few decades passed without much activity. The trees continued to grow into mature secondary forest. Locals set aside the area originally planned as a golf course and created "green parkland areas" which today are full of maturing trees, fauna, water ways and wildlife. These natural green corridors meander between subdivided lots of 1/4 to sometimes two or more acres. Recently, developers are pressuring that size smaller and some multi-unit projects have taken foothold. The area was first populated by nature lovers and isolationists who built modest homes among the woods and enjoyed this serene and unique oceanside setting. As idealic as this may sound to some, the Beaches of Nosara remained quite remote, isolated and underdeveloped until very recently. The local economy subsisted primarliy as a surfing destination due to the consisent waves of Playa Guiones. Recently, bridges were put in place over all the rivers south of the area making year-round access possible from the town of Nicoya. A new $35 million bridge spanning the Tempisque River opened in April 2003 shortening the eight-hour drive drive from San Jose to five hours. The opening of a new international airport in Liberia, a two hour drive to the north has also simplified access and put the beaches in convenient reach and attention of a new generation of residents and tourists. A soon to be completed highway extension west of San Jose to Jaco will also reduce the driving time to three hours. Today, a new group of people are discovering Nosara. They are building new homes on lots that have sat idle for decades. Land speculating is running hot for nearly three years now. This is changing the landscape socially, politically and economically. Some newcomers choose to live year round, others rent their homes to grateful tourists or annual visitors. New businesses are opening to offer services to the next generation of nature and ocean enthusiasts seeking an ocean front lifestyle-community. Others come here to grow spiritually with Yoga. Everyone enjoys the freedom of this unique setting in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Surfing Destination Playa Guiones has long been known for its reliable beach break. Surfers have migrated to the beach for decades to enjoy the warm Pacific waters and varied surf conditions. Playa Pelada has a fast right break off a rock formation and the lesser known Playa Ostional often has steep face waves of blue that are chest to head high. "Executive Surfers" have been bringing their families to Guiones for years to introduce their sons and daughters to the lifetime joy of surfing. Spiritual and Physical Healing There is a thriving spiritual and healing presence in the area that is supported by therapuetic massage practicioners and organizations such as the world renowned Nosara Yoga Institute, which for years has attracted and trained yoga instructors from around the world and also welcomes several hollywood celebrities to its retreat. Nosara Airport An asphalt airstrip near Nosara receives flights daily from the carriers Sansa and Nature Air, both flying light aircraft to the capital city of San Jose. This further shortens arrival times to Nosara from the capital and is a convenient way to arrive/depart Nosara. The Future of The Beaches of Nosara The future of the Beaches of Nosara area has yet to be written but a direction seems to be clear. Speculation has driven land prices higher in the last three years as the area has garnered new attention for its possibilities, natural beauty, climate and increased accessibility. The Costa Rican government plans to build a paved road along the Nicoya Penninsula coast from Tamarindo south passing by the Beaches of Nosara on its way. This will provide the final piece of the all-important infrastructure puzzle: location, electricity, phones, water and updated roads. Significant property value increases have followed such developments elsewhere in Costa Rica. The key to the future will always be the incredible natural environment that is already in place. When power, water, phones and roads are all upgraded near such a beautiful place, inevitably a growing number of people will want to live and invest in the area. Come now, be early, prosper and protect. A final thought, the beach areas will never be a place where high human density can be sustained. The pressure on the beach ecosystem will destroy it. Surrounding foothills offer land more suited for larger development providing a way for more people to habitat the area without crushing the "natural" reasons why people want to be here in the first place. This company supports sustainable development. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
